The Best Exercise

Ballroom dancing is considered by the medical profession one of the best exercise that you can do. In fact did you know that three minutes of dancing a fast cha-cha-cha equates jogging one mile? Also, dance is the only form of exercise associated with a  lower risk of dementia. (New England Journal of Medicine, June 19, 2003  Vol. 348 No. 25.)

Dancing is a low aerobic activity so you won’t hurt your knees.

Dancing increases your metabolism and helps you lose weight. One of my students who is taking lessons every week was told by her doctor that her blood pressure has amazingly dropped to normal since she started dancing.

Another one of my students who is a retired professor at New York University reported that her doctor is very surprised that she had gained ½ an inch in height since she started dancing. You should see her … dancing has really made a difference in her posture.

Spice up your relationship

Over the years, I have observed so many wonderful happenings through ballroom dancing. Steve .W walked to the Studio one day and wanted information about ballroom dancing. I noticed that he was shy. I suggested to him just jokingly that he would be in great demand with the ladies after a few month of learning how to dance.

Well truth be told, that’s exactly what happened. The guy had lost his shyness after a few months; he was dancing up a storm and was booming with confidence.

I have being to three weddings resulted from students meeting at my studio.

We get a lot of couples who come to learn their first dance at the Studio and one of the suggestions that I give them is to make a date at least one day a week to come for a dance lesson, and then go to a nice restaurant afterward. Often, not only they take that suggestion but they take it a step further and end up in a dance club. The point is Dancing is a vehicle that helps build strong relationships.

Some of you may know me as I have visited your studios and had the opportunity to coach you. Some of you don’t know me yet and I’m pleased to be importing some of my knowledge to you through this medium.

The Importance of Body Posture

Today I want to speak about the importance of body posture; whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, advance, learning rhythm Smooth Latin, Standard or Theater Arts. Good body carriage will enhance your balance and or body rhythm. You will experience faster improvement and will be pleasantly viewed by your peers and any audience.

To me posture translates to vertical alignment of the spine from the pelvis to the head. There should be a feeling of straight line from the pelvis to the top of the skull. To achieve that, one must tone the muscles of the stomach in order to hold the pelvis under the body. The shoulders should be lined up with the rib cage and the hips. The seat bone should be pointed directly to the floor between the feet. Please note the hip joints should remain relaxed. If they are tensed, there’s stiffness and if there’s rigidity, one cannot dance.

Before getting a lesson or practice, you should take a few minutes by yourself and put into practice the body alignment mentioned above. It’s probably a good idea to also talk to your teacher about it should you have any questions.

His Story

Jesse started dancing in at the age of 18 at a studio in Knoxville, TN. He soon fell In love with this art especially the competitive and teaching aspects that it gave him.

In 2001, Jesse, moved to Ft. Myers, FL to pursue his career where he began managing and began competing more often. In 2004 he had a chance to open his own studio in Port St. Lucie, FL and so he moved there and began to concentrate on the business.

After only a year, he missed the competitive and show side of this art and decided to pursue his teaching and professional dance career. So in July of 2005 he moved to Ft. Walton Beach, FL to study under the past champions Bruno Collins, Luann Pulliam, and Joe Trovato.

In August of 2005 Jesse met Kimalee and withing 6 weeks they competed at their first U.S. Championship placing 2nd. From there they worked extremely hard to put together a beautiful partnership while climbing the ladder and performing and competing worldwide. Then in 2009 they won their first U.S. title, and placed second in the World Invitational Championships held in Blackpool, England.

In the dance world, “Blackpool” is spoken of with sufficient respect that even dance dummies (the author included) sense its importance. There are only 6 couples invited annually worldwide and Jesse and Kimalee placed second, making them the highest ranking US representatives in 10 years. And in 2010, they captured their second U.S. title, this time in the theatrical division.

Currently they are undefeated Fred Astaire World and National Champions and their dance continues to evolve and please audiences worldwide as they mix sensuality, beauty, grace, and raw emotion.

Overall, Joe had 57 First Place finishes in the competition with 44 of these in the Gentlemen’s Silver B Division, across the American Rhythm, American Smooth and International Standard categories. Joe also recorded 5 scores of 94 in the Proficiency portion of the competition together with his instructor, Kateryna Angelone, placed 7th in the International Standard 5-Dance Championship.

Meanwhile Kateryna and her dance partner Vard became the 2011 Rising Stars Champions. The video below shows some of their dancing from the 2010 Constitution State Pro American Rhythm Competition.

The Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Mamaroneck Westchester, New York is re-opening its door under the new management of Ballroom Champions Kateryna Angelone and Stanley Mc Calla.

The Dance Studio will continue to provide quality dance instructions to the entire community of Mamaroneck and it’s environs. “The Dance Studio,” says Mr. Mc Calla, “will cater to all couples individual needs. When you arrive…

When you arrive at the studio you’ll be greeted by the studio manager and introduced to your instructor. All of the studio teachers are experienced in teaching beginner students through advanced dancers and your instructor will quickly make you feel at home in the studio environment.

Your dance goals

You’ll be asked if you have any short-term dance goals, such as an upcoming event or vacation, and what kind of music or dance styles you like. If you aren’t sure which specific dances you want to try, your teacher will choose a few for you.

Your lesson will be held in one of the studio’s two ballrooms. Don’t worry if you haven’t had prior dance experience; each figure will be broken down into very basic, natural movements. Under the guidance of your instructor, the lesson will never feel too fast or too slow and dull. It will go at your pace. By the end of your first lesson, you’ll probably be surprised just how easy it was to get started and you’ll already be dancing a few steps in several different dances.

Alone or with a partner…

If you come alone, you’ll get to dance the entire time with your “easy-to-dance-with” teacher. If you participate as a couple, your instructor will assign each of you your own responsibilities as the leader and follower so that you can succeed as a team on the dance floor.

What to wear

You should wear comfortable clothes which allow easy movement. Dressing in layers is a good idea because as the session progresses, you’ll get warm just as with any other exercise. You should wear shoes which fit securely on your feet – slingbacks and sandals are not good choices. Rubber-soled shoes have a tendency to stick to the floor, so it’s preferable to wear either a leather-soled shoe or, ideally, a ballroom dance shoe with suede sole. If you’re a woman who normally wears a high heel when going out, we suggest you wear a similar heel height on your lesson.

Your shoes

One of the central concerns of the bride and groom’s families is the wedding reception, since this is where the married couple celebrate their union for the first time in public. The first dance is where a couple marks the beginning of their journey together as a man and wife. It is more than just an entertaining number for your guests. The wedding dance does not happen on a daily basis. It is a way for the couple to publicly express their love for each other through beautiful movements that retell the age-old story of enduring love anew. Giving it new expression as only the new couple can. It is an opportunity for the new couple to experience each other in differently. Dancing is a powerful language of the body. A foretelling of the new life together where two begin to move as one. Dance has the power to newly bind a couple as newlyweds, giving fuller expression to the vows given in the ceremonies earlier.

If you are hesitant to dance for whatever reason, loosen up and enjoy the singular moment of your first dance! Beginners can sign up for affordable classes at their local dance studio. Do not be intimidated by the studio’s appearance. All expert dancers have started out as beginners. Select a song that you both enjoy (many couples have a song that is special to them already.) Use that! About Ballroom Dance Shoes

You may be new to ballroom dancing and not think that the right shoes are that important.  But using ballroom dance shoes are essential to success on the dance floor for both experienced and novice dancers. The most important aspect of the ballroom dance shoe is the non-slip suede sole which provides the right combination of grip and slide. Rubber sneaker-like soles can stick to the floor and cause knee injuries, and leather soles can slide too much.

Dance shoes also have thinner soles than normal shoes. Most dancing shoes have a steel shank for support and the shoe material is flexible and lightweight. Don’t wear your ballroom dance shoes on the street. Rough surfaces and dirt will wear them out quickly. Carry them in a bag and put them on when you get to class or to the ballroom.

Choose a snug, but not toe-crushing, fit. Try on several styles before purchasing. Shoes should be both comfortable and functional. So buy in person the first time. An experienced salesperson can help you find the proper fit and style.  Once you’ve found shoes you like and know what size you need, you can also purchase them online.

Men’s dance shoes are typically black lace-up Oxfords with a flat heel for standard dances and a 1 to 2 inch heel for Latin dances. For women, form is almost as important as function, and shoe styles are as varied as dance categories. Basic designs include open or closed-toe pumps and sandals. Heels in women’s shoes are slim or flared and generally range in height from 1 to 3 inches. Slim heels make turns and other moves easier. Flared heels are preferred for the Latin dances because they provide more stability. Although ballroom dance shoes come in a variety of colors, many women choose flesh-colored shoes, which help extend the leg line.

Expect to spend about $100 for a good pair of ballroom shoes.

Tango is a derivative form of the Cuban habanera, the Uruguayan milonga, and with influences of African rhythms brought about by the slave trade. The word “tango” may either be of African origin, meaning “closed place” or may be derived from the Latin word “tangere”, meaning “to touch.”

A study on the health benefits of Tango was made by Patricia McKinley of McGill University in Montreal last 2005. It helps sharpen the aging brain along with keeping an aging body in shape. It was concluded that the seniors ages 68 to 91 who took up Tango lessons showed much improvement in their self-esteem, balance and motor coordination, and multitasking skill. Isn’t that amazing? This shows that everyone can benefit from the perks of this lovely dance!

Salsa is a Spanish term for sauce which implies a spicy flavor. It has its roots traced back to the Old World country dance known as Contra-Danze or Danzn. It was brought by the escaping French from Haitin to Cuba. Rumba, with beats used as a form of worship to African gods, was carried on to the New World due to the slave trade around the 16th century. In order to preserve their heritage, slaves who were converted to Christianity blended the rhythms with the Danzn. During the 1920s, many Americans ran off to Cuba as a result of evading the prohibition. They brought radio broadcasting with them, which was a big factor in making Afro-Caribbean music and several Latin dances popular in the Western world.

In 1973, Puerto Rican actor Izzy Sanabria started a Latino version of the “Soul Train” TV show named “Salsa” on New York’s Channel 41. He also began publishing the very influential Latin NY Magazine which held the first ever Salsa Awards in 1975 which gained international recognition for the unique genre of dance music. Partner-work in the Mambo was derived from the Hustle’s popularity at that time. In the 1980s, Salsa dance instructor Eddie Torres, paved way for the Mambo in becoming a professional dance by setting its guidelines. This dance genre, like its music, is widely known as Salsa. It is now one of the most popular types of Latin dances which can be enjoyed and mastered in a local dance studio.

A lot of social benefits can be reaped from Salsa dancing. First, your circle of acquaintances and friends become wider since most classes are offered in groups. There are plenty of Salsa dance clubs that are great places to show off your skills while interacting with others. Next, those who are looking for romance should give Salsa dancing a shot! Singles can easily meet members of the opposite sex since this dance requires a partner. If your relationship with your significant other is stuck in a rut, signing up for dance lessons can spice up things since both of you get to express yourselves through sensuous bodily movements. Lastly, it can help you boost your self-confidence as your body experiences an endorphin rush after a session of dancing to upbeat Latin music. Once you feel good about yourself, other aspects of your life such as your career, studies, and/or family life become less stressful. It shuts down your insecurities which are deterrent to your personal growth.

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute reported that dancing can help you manage your weight effectively, lower your blood pressure, reduce your risk of coronary heart diseases, and strengthen the bones of your hips and legs. According to Mayo Clinic researchers, social dances can decrease stress, increase energy levels, improve muscle tone and coordination, and strengthen your body. Like other types of exercises or sports, the benefits that you get depend on how long you have danced, the methods that you use. and your skill level.

To take up Salsa dancing, there’s no need to book a flight to Cuba or other Latin American countries, though that could well be an excellent course of action! Alternatively you can easily sign up for affordable and authentic lessons at your local dance studio. Remember, dancing has no boundaries. You can be of any age, shape or size and there’s no stopping you from pursuing your dreams, of experiencing the thrill of movement and music, and of improving yourself through Salsa dancing!

Studies have shown that exercising makes it easy for you to undergo labor and regain your pre-pregnancy body. But do, as always, keep in mind that you need to consult with your doctor regarding your exercise plans. If you exercised before you became pregnant, you only need to modify your routine in time.

As the body begins to gain weight, a lot of pregnant women find find it hard to find an exercise program that is suited for them. So if you want a fun, and safe form of exercise, try ballroom dancing! It is low-impact, fun and social. And you can also get your husband to exercise with you!

Ballroom dancing is safe because it’s easier on your ankles, legs, and lower back and it’s not jarring on your joints. Examples of ballroom dances are rhythm dances (Cha Cha, Mambo, Rumba, Salsa, Samba,and Swing) and smooth dances (Fox Trot, Tango, and Waltz). With a lot of dances to choose from, there are many that are appropriate for pregnant women. The Waltz can either be slow and smooth or quick and twirling (opt for the former). It begins with a basic box step with only four directions to make a square on the floor. It’s a beautiful dance that highlights the beauty of a soon-to-be mother! The Rumba is a great dance to learn also. It doesn’t require excessive movement and once you know the steps, you’ll be able to apply it with many dance songs.

For dance classes, you don’t have to be worried about your wardrobe. Unlike the elaborate dresses and high-heels worn by women in dance sports events and TV shows, comfort and ease of movement are key for practice clothes. So simply dress comfortably. Choose shoes that feel good and are perhaps a little bit larger than your normal ones. Wear ones with leather soles as athletic shoes with rubber soles are not safe since they tend to stick as you turn on the dance floor.
Be prepared for something really fun and engaging when you come ballroom dancing during this wonderful time of your life. And the baby will love it too! Music, movement and mom’s heartbeat, what more could a baby want!

Next, taking dance lessons can be good for releasing stress. Many people are worried that they’re unsure if they can make it. It’s actually a simple thing to do. You start to relax and you become absorbed as the music is played. You dance with a nice person that’s in front of you, remember the steps, and think about the laws of dance from your teacher. It’s like playing a sports activity. It’s very absorbing for a lot of people. The rest of the world may not melt away but your problems or issues tend to go away. Unlike meditating wherein you’re in a sleep state, dancing makes you very focused and connected especially if you like the music or the song. It’s like being in a car, singing out loud while driving fast! It’s a “yes” moment yet safer. You’re also invigorating your body and building those endorphins out there. Everybody knows that those make you feel better. It’s like watching a good movie that makes you laugh. Instead of just sitting and watching, you become part of the movie wherein you are actually moving around yourself. It really takes you into another place.

Lastly, if you follow and listen to your teacher’s suggestions, it definitely gets you to use your core muscles and be more aware of working on your posture. Some people find they lose a couple of inches around their waists after toning these areas. They look slimmer & taller and fit into clothes differently. It’s an aerobic exercise wherein you will burn off calories and lose weight if you come to the studio regularly. Even if you’re not worried about losing weight, you get to tighten and tone your muscles especially the midsection area.

As mentioned in the two previous issues, there are three main elements necessary to develop excellent balance.

THE FIRST ELEMENT (Part 1 of 3) – “THE SUPPORTING LEG”

Refers to the constant awareness of the supporting leg which is necessary for good body balance. It is the supporting leg that sustains the body upright.

THE SECOND ELEMENT (Part 2 of 3) -”VERTICAL ALIGNMENT”

Refers to the vertical alignment of the three main body blocks:

1. Knees
2. Hips
3. Shoulders

The vertical alignment will allow you to stay on your toes in perfect balance, and master the rise and fall in dances like the Waltz and Foxtrot.

THE THIRD ELEMENT – “HORIZONTAL ALIGNMENT” (which we will concentrate on in this article)

Refers to the horizontal alignment of the hip line as well as the shoulder line. The key ingredient for turning and spinning in balance.

PRINT THIS PAGE AND TRY THE FOLLOWING EXERCISE

Stand with your feet together, balance on your left foot (let the arms hang straight down on both sides of the body).

Keeping elbows in place, bring your arms forward as if carrying a tray (you can use an actual tray as a prop for this exercise).

Slowly lift your Right Knee up in front of you as high as you can and point the toes downward. Sustain that position for a moment concentrating on the supporting column or left side of the body.

Slowly lower your leg down and transfer your weight.

Slowly lift your Left Knee in front of you as high as you can and point toes downward. Sustain that position for a moment concentrating on the supporting column or right side of the body.

Slowly lower your leg down and transfer your weight.

Repeat several times alternating legs.

ADVANCE TIPS. As you practice this exercise, relax the knees and lift the pelvis up by shortening the stomach muscles and stretching the lower back. Picture the hips as if they were on a pedestal- perfectly horizontal.

When you find the correct body position, you will notice that your body is perfectly aligned vertically as well as horizontally. You will also become very aware of the axis or column that supports your body.

Practice the three main elements of balance, and you will enjoy a tremendous control of your body.All of your movements will be more dynamic, rhythmic, and graceful – on and off the dance floor.

Ballroom dancing to help support sustained communities is one of the numerous and unique ways the Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Mamaroneck (MamaFad) team contributes to health and well-being of the local community.

This year on May 6th, the Washingtonville Housing Alliance, a locally sponsored not-for-profit corporation working to preserve and enhance the quality of life in the Village of Mamaroneck and the surrounding area will be holding it gala fundraising event and MamaFad will be there to support and help those at the dinner have a truly memorable evening.

The music will be provided by the Mamaroneck High School Jazz Band and will have a feature trombonist leading the way.

The evening will be pure and simple fun, food, entertainment and exercise. And all this will help the Alliance continue their mission of constructing new housing and improving existing housing for low and moderate income residents.

Who could argue with an evening of music and dance, of American and Latin Ballroom that actively sustains culture, health and friendship across generations and cultures? Come join us in the fun of dance and contribution!

So you’re new to Ballroom?

If you’re new to ballroom dancing, you might be a little apprehensive coming to your first lesson at a dance studio. Exactly what happens? How difficult will it be? Who will be your instructor? What should you wear? Many questions will run through your mind. Here’s some information to help you prepare.

When You Arrive

When you arrive at the studio you’ll be greeted by the studio manager and introduced to your instructor. In any of the Fred Astaire Dance Studios, teachers are experienced in teaching beginner students through advanced dancers. Your instructor will quickly make you feel at home in the studio environment.

Dance Goals

You’ll be asked if you have any short-term dance goals, such as an upcoming event or vacation, and what kind of music or dance styles you like. If you aren’t sure which specific dances you want to try, your teacher will choose a few for you.

No Prior Experience. No Worries

Don’t worry if you haven’t had prior dance experience; each figure will be broken down into very basic, natural movements. Under the guidance of your instructor, the lesson will never feel too fast or too slow and dull. It will go at your pace.
By the end of your first lesson, you’ll probably be surprised just how easy it was to get started and you’ll already be dancing a few steps in several different dances.

Alone or With Someone. No Worries.

If you come alone, you’ll get to dance the entire time with your “easy-to-dance-with” teacher. If you participate as a couple, your instructor will assign each of you your own responsibilities as the leader and follower so that you can succeed as a team on the dance floor.
You should wear comfortable clothes which allow easy movement. Dressing in layers is a good idea because as the session progresses, you’ll get warm just as with any other exercise. You should wear shoes which fit securely on your feet – slingbacks and sandals are not good choices and rubber-soled shoes have a tendency to stick to the floor. So it’s preferable to wear either a leather-soled shoe or, ideally, a ballroom dance shoe with suede sole. If you’re a woman who normally wears a high heel when going out, we suggest you wear a similar heel height on your lesson.

Dance Shoes

Dance shoes aren’t necessary for your first lesson, but if you’d like to shop ahead of time, we recommend you find and visit a local dance shoe store. They will help you select a pair of shoes appropriate for someone getting started in ballroom dancing.

Many people come to our studio for a special purpose … an upcoming dinner dance, a wedding, a visit to a salsa or swing nightclub; or because someone gave them a gift certificate.
Whatever the initial reason, most of our students continue taking lessons simply because they enjoy dancing. Dancing is exercise, dancing is personal expression, dancing is responding to music. Dancing is a way to momentarily forget the ordinary worries of life and to be alive in a completely spontaneous way.
In particular, ballroom dancing is about sharing the joy of movement with another person. Certainly ballroom dancing also improves posture, poise and memory. It strengthens leg and core muscles while increasing flexibility. Yet even more, by learning the skills of leading and following, partnership dancing gives an individual the opportunity to share rhythm, desire and the exploration of space with other people.

First you can watch a couple of the videos below to get a sense of the dance. The fun and pace of the ’20s and the challenge of the new century to bring a controlled strength into it resulting in a smooth dance that is elegant, romantic and still fun.

Even wonder which is the music for foxtrot? Often if the music is more from the ’50s and ’60s, it will be foxtrot! But of course there are more musical scores that can be used.

The count for the foxtrot is baiscally “slow, slow, quick, quick.” There is a rise and fall in the steps and don’t forget to lead with your heels as you step out!

The woman also needs to learn to position her head and neck with a “stretch” and angle that gives the attitude of grace and style. Keeping the shoulders down (relaxed?) while reaching high with your head is one way of describing it. Ask your instructor how they would!

The full count of “quick, quick” also includes a gentle, controlled rise and fall. Arms are intended to help provide the frame of both the man and the woman, by which they connect and develop the sense of movement as partners. This “frame” allows both to feel the other both in terms of where they are as well as to indicate intention to change direction and/or pace.

Heading off to ballroom dance class for the first time? Its fun and exciting to start a new hobby such as ballroom dancing – but there is always a slight nervousness too – you don’t want to look out of place – so what are the dos and don’ts of dressing for a ballroom dance class?

The Right Shoes for a Ballroom Dance Class

Shoes are the most important thing to get right. In ballroom ladies general dance backward – you need to wear a shoe that allows you to do that – avoid slip-ons and sling backs in general. A proper ballroom dance shoe is a court shoe with usually a 2″ or 3″ heel – but wearing any low healed shoe that will stay on your foot is a good start. Do not wear sports shoes – they make it too hard to turn and you may hurt your ankle or knee. A leather shoe is the ideal – but many “dress shoe” artificial soles will work just fine. Bare feet are unacceptable (and extremely difficult to dance in).

The Right Clothes for Ballroom Dance Class

Most serious ballroom dance students will wear a practice skirt – general a below the knee skirt cut on the cross often of lycra or chiffon. The top may be fairly close fitting – but must allow you to raise you arms easily – so generally is made of stretch fabric. You don’t have to wear “proper” practice wear as often you will have some clothing which will fit this description in your wardrobe already. A leotard with a skirt will work as well. Avoid strapless tops – you’ll be surprised what they do once you start holding your arms up properly.

The teacher needs to see how you are dancing which is why most serious students will wear black or darker colours and have clothing which fits fairly closely – too many ruffles and frills just get in the way.

The dress has to be wide enough for the man to easily swing his leg between yours, this doesn’t have to be a full circle – pleated skirts or skirts with gorgets from the knee work as well.

If you are doing American style smooth or Australian New Vogue or English Old Time you may want a full-circle skirt so that you can hold your skirt out with your free hand.
